Swimming With Hair Extensions: The Summer Protocol

You can swim with tape-ins, keratin bonds, and micro-rings. Whether your hair survives the season comes down to two short windows: the ninety seconds before you get in the water, and the ten minutes after you get out.

Extension hair is on its own out there. Your scalp produces sebum that travels down your own strands and protects them. It never reaches extension hair. Your own hair also grows out damage over months, but extension hair does not. Every change it goes through between June and September stays.

Virgin Slavic hair handles all of this significantly better than the chemically processed hair that fills most of the market. It still needs a protocol.

This is the one we give clients before a Malibu weekend, a Cabo villa, or ten days in the Cyclades.

The short version

  • Soak your hair in fresh water for 60–90 seconds before you get in the ocean or pool.
  • Apply a leave-in with a real UV filter, mid-lengths and ends only, 1–2 cm clear of the bonds.
  • Braid it. Loose braid, every time.
  • Rinse with fresh water within 10 minutes of getting out.
  • Dry the bonds completely before you sleep. No exceptions.
  • Wait 72 hours after installation before any full submersion.

Everything below explains why each of these matters, and what happens when you skip one.

What the sun actually does to extension hair

Three things happen at the same time, and they are easy to confuse with each other.

Your colour shifts

On dark hair, UVA penetrates into the fiber and breaks down melanin. Rich brunettes drift warm, first red, then orange. This is the natural pigment being dismantled, which is why it does not wash out.

On blonde and platinum work, the toner goes first. Violet and blue dyes are the least lightfast pigments in a colourist's kit, and they are exactly the ones holding cool blondes in place. Once they fade, the underlying warmth is exposed. The fiber itself also yellows over longer exposure as UV oxidises the keratin and forms new yellow compounds inside the hair.

Why this matters practically: the brass that appears after a beach week is partly a toner problem and partly a fiber problem. A gloss will fix the first. Nothing fixes the second.

Your hair loses strength

Hair holds its shape through disulfide bonds. Sulfur-to-sulfur links between cystine residues that act as the internal scaffolding of the fiber. UV exposure, mostly through the reactive oxygen species it generates inside the hair, converts these links into cysteic acid.

That conversion is permanent. Every bond lost is a bond the hair does not get back.

You feel it before you see it: hair that used to stretch and spring back now snaps under the brush. Elasticity drops. Wet strength drops further.

Your hair changes texture

Healthy hair is water-repellent because of a molecular layer bonded to its outermost surface (18-MEA), sometimes called the F-layer. UV strips it away.

Once it is gone, three things follow. The hair wets faster. It absorbs more of whatever it is sitting in: salt, chlorine, dissolved metals. And strands grate against each other instead of sliding, which is why mid-length tangling is usually the first sign of sun damage anyone notices.

Why virgin Slavic hair holds up better

This is the single biggest variable in how your hair looks in September, and it is decided before you ever buy the extension.

Melanin is not just colour. It is protection. Melanin absorbs UV across a broad range of wavelengths and neutralises free radicals throughout the interior of the fiber. Virgin hair carries this protection built in, distributed evenly through the cortex, at a concentration no topical product comes close to matching. It is the most effective UV filter your hair will ever have, and it is already there.

Virgin hair starts the summer with a full budget of disulfide bonds. Chemical lightening converts a large share of those bonds to cysteic acid before the hair is ever installed. Depigmented hair arrives at the beach having already spent part of what it needs to get through the season.

The surface layer is still intact. Virgin hair retains its 18-MEA and a smooth, closed cuticle. Processed hair has lost both. Water uptake, salt uptake, and metal uptake all rise in step with that loss.

Our working figure in the showroom (an internal observation, not a laboratory number) is that heavily lightened hair shows a full season's visible degradation in roughly a third of the exposure that virgin hair needs to reach the same point.

Saltwater: the damage happens while you dry

Seawater carries around 35 grams of dissolved salt per litre. While you are swimming, that salt is in solution and moving freely in and out of the fiber.

The real problem starts when you get out and let your hair dry in the sun.

As water evaporates, the salt left behind becomes more and more concentrated until it crystallises on the surface of the hair and in the gaps between cuticle scales. Salt crystals are abrasive. Any movement at that point, from a towel or a brush or the wind, chips cuticle edges. That is the origin of the matte, coarse, light-scattering texture people call beach hair.

Sea salt is not just sodium chloride. It also contains magnesium and calcium chlorides, which pull moisture out of humid air. Hair that dried with salt still in it stays tacky, rough, and difficult to manage until the deposit is removed.

Chemistry does begin the moment you go under. But the mechanical damage is concentrated in the drying phase, which is the part you have complete control over.

Salt pools are not a gentle alternative

Saltwater pools are standard in private homes across Los Angeles, and they are widely assumed to be easier on hair than chlorinated pools. They are not.

A salt chlorine generator produces the same hypochlorous acid as a chlorine pool. It simply makes it on site by running current through dissolved salt instead of having it added from a bucket. The sanitiser reaching your hair is chemically identical.

You get the salt exposure on top of it. Salt pools run at roughly 3,000–4,000 ppm salinity (around a tenth of seawater). Low enough that you cannot taste much, high enough to leave a deposit as your hair dries.

The salt also accelerates corrosion of copper heaters, heat exchangers, and fittings. That puts dissolved copper in the water, which brings us to the next problem.

Treat a salt pool as both a pool and an ocean. Full protocol, every time.

Green hair: it is copper, not chlorine

Chlorine does not turn hair green. Dissolved copper does.

Copper gets into pool water three ways:

  • Copper sulfate algaecides
  • Copper-silver ionisation sanitising systems
  • Corrosion of copper plumbing and heating equipment, which speeds up whenever pool pH drops below 7.2

Chlorine's role is to prepare the landing sites. It oxidises the hair's sulfur bonds into cysteic acid and creates additional negatively charged groups along the protein backbone. Copper ions carry a positive charge and bind to exactly those sites, forming blue-green complexes inside the fiber.

Deposits concentrate wherever the hair is most porous and most oxidised: previously lightened mid-lengths and ends. Virgin hair with a closed cuticle and few available binding sites resists this far more effectively. That's why two people can leave the same pool and only one of them is green.

Purple shampoo will not fix it

Toning pigments work on unwanted warmth in the yellow-orange range. A copper complex bound inside the fiber is a metal, not a pigment. There is no position on the colour wheel that cancels it.

Chelating agents are the only thing that works. A chelator wraps the copper ion in a molecular cage that holds it more tightly than your hair does. The metal transfers over and rinses out.

Look for these on the ingredient list:

  • Tetrasodium EDTA or disodium EDTA
  • Etidronic acid (HEDP)
  • Sodium phytate or phytic acid
  • Sodium gluconate

Citric acid on its own is too weak to clear an established deposit.

If your hair has already turned green

  1. Apply chelating shampoo to dry hair. Wet hair dilutes the active ingredient before it can work. Dry application keeps it at full strength. Some brands specify damp application, follow the manufacturer if they do.
  2. Mid-lengths and ends only. Stay 1–2 cm clear of keratin bonds and tape wefts. The surfactant systems in these products are aggressive and will compromise adhesion at the attachment point.
  3. Leave it 3–5 minutes, emulsify with a little water, rinse thoroughly.
  4. Twice per session maximum. Heavy deposits usually need two sessions, 3–4 days apart.
  5. Follow with an acidic conditioning mask (pH 4.5–5.5) for at least 10 minutes. Chelation removes minerals, but it also lifts deposited toner and leaves the hair porous.
  6. Re-tone only once the hair is dry and the metal is gone. Toning over copper produces muddy, unpredictable results.

The sunscreen problem nobody warns you about

Sunscreen transfers from your hands, shoulders, and back onto your lengths constantly. On blonde hair, some filters then react with iron and copper in tap water and pool water and leave an orange-pink stain that toner cannot correct.

Avobenzone (listed as butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane) is the main offender. It is also unstable in sunlight unless the formula includes a stabiliser, so it is doing less for your skin than the label suggests.

What to do:

  • Let facial and body sunscreen absorb fully before you tie your hair back or let it down.
  • Rinse your hair after applying sunscreen to your shoulders, not before.
  • If you have blonde or lifted lengths, favour mineral filters – zinc oxide and titanium dioxide – for the areas your hair touches. They sit on the surface and do not stain.
  • Add a chelating wash to your routine for any week of heavy sunscreen use, not just heavy pool use.

A note on hair sunscreen: there is no SPF standard for hair products. Any bottle marked "UV protection" is unregulated on that claim. Check the ingredient list for an actual filter: benzophenone-4, ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate, or butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane. If none appear, you are holding a conditioner.

If you are travelling to Hawaii, Key West, or the eco-parks of the Riviera Maya, note that oxybenzone and octinoxate are restricted or banned. Mineral filters and UPF fabric are the reliable alternatives.

Before you get in the water

Soak first, then seal. Hair absorbs up to 30% of its weight in water. A fiber already carrying most of that load has far less room for salt water or pool water. Pre-saturation is the most effective single thing you can do, and it takes ninety seconds.

  • Saturate with fresh water for 60–90 seconds. Outdoor shower, tap, bottled water – anything clean. Surface wetting is not saturation. The hair should feel heavy.
  • Apply leave-in while it is still dripping. Check for a real UV filter on the list, plus conditioning agents and film formers.
  • Mid-lengths and ends. Keep oils, silicones, and rich emollients 1–2 cm clear of keratin bonds and tape attachment points. Lipids at the interface weaken adhesion.
  • Braid it. Loose three-strand, or two French braids. Contained hair does not tangle, does not rub against itself, and does not present its full surface area to the water.
  • Add a UPF hat or scarf, positioned so no elastic band crosses the attachment rows. Four hours of tension on a bond line does damage of its own.

The 10-minute rinse rule

Rinse with fresh water within 10 minutes of getting out.

Timing is the whole point. While your hair is still fully wet, the salt is dissolved and rinses away without resistance. Once evaporation starts concentrating it, crystals form inside the cuticle layer – and a rinse at that stage takes off the surface deposit while leaving the interior load exactly where it is.

  • 60–90 seconds of running fresh water, cool to lukewarm. Displace the salt, do not sprinkle it.
  • Reapply leave-in immediately.
  • Do not sunbathe to dry off. Swollen fiber, lifted cuticle, concentrating salt, direct UV – that is the worst combination your hair can be in. Rinse, apply leave-in, cover it.

The bond rule: completely dry before sleep

This one causes more damage than sun and salt combined, and it is entirely avoidable.

Water works its way into the bond material and acts as a softener. The polymer's softening point drops, the tip goes from rigid to pliable, and it starts to slowly deform under any sustained pull. Eight hours of pillow friction and head movement against a softened bond is a slow mechanical failure.

Your hair is also at its weakest when wet. Water disrupts the hydrogen bonds inside the cortex, and wet strength falls well below dry strength. A compromised bond loaded onto a weakened strand for eight hours is the most common cause of what clients describe as sudden August shedding.

How to dry properly: cool or low setting, nozzle aimed at the attachment row, fingers or a vented brush, 10–15 minutes. The lengths can air-dry. The bonds cannot.

Full checklist

Before swimming

  • Detangle completely, ends to root, with a loop brush
  • Saturate with fresh water for 60–90 seconds
  • Apply UV-filter leave-in, mid-lengths and ends, 1–2 cm clear of bonds
  • Braid loosely or twist into a low, soft bun
  • Add a UPF hat or scarf with no band tension across the rows
  • Confirm your last installation or maintenance was at least 72 hours ago

In the water

  • Keep the braid in for the whole session
  • Keep your head above water where you can; avoid repeated diving with loose hair
  • Skip hot tubs entirely. Water at 38–40 °C with concentrated sanitiser accelerates every reaction described here and softens bond material directly
  • Limit continuous exposure to 45–60 minutes, then get out, rinse, and reapply before going back in
  • Never scrub, rub, or twist wet hair in the water

Straight after

  • Fresh-water rinse within 10 minutes, 60–90 seconds, cool to lukewarm
  • Blot with a microfiber towel – squeeze along the length, do not rub, and never wrap in a turban that pulls the rows
  • Reapply leave-in to damp hair
  • Detangle only if you need to: ends first, working upward, supporting the row between two fingers at the root
  • Keep the hair covered and out of direct sun while it dries

Evening recovery

  • Cleanse with a sulfate-free shampoo at pH 4.5–5.5. Acidic pH closes the cuticle; alkaline products keep it lifted
  • Chelating shampoo once a week during any period of regular pool, salt pool, or heavy sunscreen use. Mid-lengths and ends, 3–5 minutes, clear of the bond line. Not more often as chelators strip toner along with metals
  • Match the treatment to what the hair actually needs: hydrolysed keratin or amino acids for porous, previously lightened hair; fatty alcohols, ceramides, and cationic emollients for virgin hair that reads dry but is structurally sound. Protein on hair that needs lipids is what produces the stiff, strawlike feel
  • Bond-building treatment every 7–10 days through the summer, look for bis-aminopropyl diglycol dimaleate or maleic acid systems. Not daily
  • Dry the root and attachment zone completely, cool setting, 10–15 minutes
  • Sleep in a loose braid on a silk or satin pillowcase

Frequently asked questions

Can I swim with hair extensions?

Yes. Pre-saturate with fresh water, apply a UV-filter leave-in, braid, rinse within 10 minutes of getting out, and dry the bonds fully before you sleep. Unprotected swimming damages extensions. Swimming itself does not.

How long after installation should I wait before swimming?

We ask clients to wait 72 hours. This is our own protocol and it is more conservative than the industry norm. For tape-ins the reason is real – acrylic adhesive continues building peel strength for 24–48 hours after application. For keratin bonds the material hardens within minutes, so the waiting period is about letting the row settle and avoiding manipulation during the period when slippage is most likely.

Why did my extensions turn green when my own hair didn't?

Copper binds to oxidised, negatively charged sites in porous hair. Previously lightened extension hair carries far more of those sites than your virgin root growth, so it takes up more copper from identical water.

Are saltwater pools safer for extensions than chlorine pools?

No. A salt chlorine generator makes the same hypochlorous acid, and you get salt deposit on top of it. Salt also corrodes copper fittings, which raises the risk of green tones. Run the full protocol.

Will a swim cap solve the problem?

A silicone cap over braided, pre-saturated, leave-in-treated hair reduces exposure substantially, but it does not seal. Water gets in at the hairline. Run the rinse protocol anyway.

Is saltwater or chlorine worse?

They damage differently. Chlorinated pools carry the metal-deposition risk and are harder on blonde and pastel work. Saltwater is harder on texture and manageability. Both need the same defensive sequence.

Can purple shampoo correct green tones?

No. Toning pigments address warmth in the yellow-orange range. Bound copper has to be removed by chelation, not neutralised with pigment.

Does virgin hair need all of this too?

Yes, though it has more margin for error. Virgin Slavic hair carries its own melanin protection, a full complement of disulfide bonds, and an intact surface layer – it takes considerably more exposure to reach the same point. What it does not have is any ability to repair itself. The protocol protects the head start rather than compensating for the absence of one.
